The precise time taken for the arc to extinguish is meticulously recorded in seconds. Two tungsten electrodes are strategically positioned at a specified interval on the sample plate,where the arc begins to occur intermittently, eventually shortening to form a continuous arc as the current escalates. The subjected material endures increasingly severe arc conditions until it culminates in failure. Resistance to arcs is crucial for insulating materials employed in high-voltage switches or low-voltage high-current switches, where arcing is a regular occurrence during operation. Only materials exhibiting extraordinary arc resistance qualify.
In the world of electrical and electronic devices, insulating materials exposed to high-voltage, low-current arc discharges reveal unique surface damage patterns near the arc. Such discharges lead to local thermal and chemical degradation and corrosion, ultimately forming a conductive path on the material.
