The material endures increasingly harsh arc conditions, culminating in eventual failure. Arc resistance is crucial for insulating materials used in high-voltage switches or low-voltage high-current switches that regularly encounter arcs. Only materials with exceptional arc resistance meet the standard.
In the realm of electrical and electronic devices, insulating materials exposed to high-voltage, low-current arc discharges demonstrate distinct surface damage variations near the arc. These discharges induce localized thermal and chemical deterioration, creating a conductive path. Once a conductive channel is formed, the material is considered to have failed the test.
The Arc Resistance Tester adheres to standards such as GB1411, IEC61621, ASTMC495, UL746A, making it vital for executing simulated safety testing procedures.
